What are the Fêtes Nocturnes?

Every summer since 1987, Grignan has staged a theatre show in front of the magnificent façade of its château. A director is invited to present his or her original creation in the heart of the main courtyard. In this unique and sublime setting, in front of the illuminated Renaissance façade of the castle, the public will discover a popular theatre show created especially for this venue. One show and one show only, for a total of 44 performances over two summer months, the perfect way to get into the swing of open-air theatre.

Molière’s L’avare, a hilarious comedy of cascading plots

Harpagon, the miser, loves nothing but his money; he sees nothing but thieves around him, he suspects everyone of trying to steal his money. His son and daughter talk to each other: “I think”, he says, “they are signalling to each other to steal my purse”. He searched his son’s servant; after examining his two hands, he asked about the others. He denies his children the necessities of life, and his son, reduced to lacking everything, becomes a gambler. Harpagon learns of this, and instead of reproaching him for this vice, he advises him to invest the money he earns from gambling at a high rate of interest. For his son Cléante and his daughter Élise, he has chosen a rich widow, the Lord Anselme, a mature man of no more than fifty, but noble, gentle, prudent, wise and very rich. His steward, Valère, who secretly desires Élise’s hand in marriage, raises a few objections.

Burlesque, offbeat and downright crazy, this Avare is sure to delight audiences under the stars at the Château de Grignan!
